(10) Award for Promotion of Women's Welfare to SANGEETA OHRI by Film Star Asha Parekh and Chairman Ram Jawhrani. (Introduction bv Sheila Chaman).

Seven year — old Shrutika Chandwani has bagged a special award instituted by Sahyog Foundation for breaking the Limca Book of World Record in Limbo Skating.

The award shall be presented by Maharashtra Chief Minister Narayan Rane on May 27, 1999, at the eleventh annual function of Sahyog Foundation, its Chairman, Ram Jawhrani, said in a release here today.

Shrutika recently toured USA to give her performance in Limbo Skating.

Another Special Award this year goes to Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (MTNL) for promotion of Hindi Language, Jawhrani said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister, Narayan Rane, has eulogized the role of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in the development of nation and called upon such voluntary bodies to supplement the efforts of the state administration for the uplift of the downtrodden.

He was addressing a gathering at the 11th annual function of Sahyog Foundation, a prominent socio-cultural organization, here last night.

Rane said his Government would extend all help and support to NGOs like Sahyog Foundation which played the role of catalyst for the betterment of the Society.

Notable feature of the function was lighting of 'Sadbhavna' lamp by Pramod Navalkar, Maharashtra Minister for cultural Affairs.

The Chairman of Sahyog Foundation, Ram Jawhrani, in his welcome address, briefly outlined the activities of his organization. The Foundation, he said, was committed to promote National Integration and had taken up cudgels against social evils such as dowry menace and drug abuse.

On the Occasion, Sahyog Foundation Awards were conferred on Individuals/Institutions who have done pioneering work in their respective fields.

Ram Jethmalani, Shatrughan Sinha and Rekha were conferred Lifetime Achievement Awards while Hockey Player Dhanraj Pi I lay and Dr. Mariamma Varghese, Vice Chancellor of SNDT University, received Sports and Education Awards respectively.

Others felicitated with Sahyog Awards were Dowarko Sundrani (Rural Development), Dr. Suresh Advani (Medical), Raj Thackeray (Art), Waman Kendre (Marathi Theatre), Shanti Avedna Ashram (Public Service), National Association for the Blind (NAB), Shrutika Chandwani (Sports - Limbo Skating), Dr. Jaisingh Phadtare (Family Welfare), Sangeeta Ohri (Women's Welfare), Pradeep Chandra (Photo Journalism) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. (Promotion of Hindi).

Asha Parekh received the Best Direction Award for T.V. Serial "Kora Kagaz". Producer Shammi and artists Renuka Shahane, Sal il Ankola, Ajay Behl, Sonam Malhotra were also felicitated.

‘Nav Ratan’ Awards were conferred on Playback singers, Udit Narayan, Shabbir Kumar, Sadhana Sargam, Sonali Vajpayee, Kanchan, Suresh Vadkar and Jojo.

Awards in the categories of Welfare of the Handicapped and Promotion of Art go to National Association for the Blind and Raj Thackeray respectively, the Chairman of Sahyog Foundation, Ram Jawhrani, announced here today.

Shanti Avedna Ashram, hospice for terminally ill patients in Mumbai, would be conferred ‘Public Service’ award, while Dwarko Sundrani, Chief of Samanvay Ashram in Bodhgaya (Bihar) and close associate of Vinobha Bhave, would be honoured with "Gramin Messiah" award.

Hockey Player Dhanraj Pillay and Dr. Mariamma Varghese, Vice Chancellor of SNDT Women's University, have bagged awards in the field of Sports and Education respectively, Foundation Chairman, Ram Jawhrani said.

Sahyog Foundation, which is celebrating 11th anniversary this year shall felicitate Ms. Sangeeta Ohri, Vice President of Balkan-ji-Bari with Women's Welfare award and Dr. Suresh Advani, Cancer Specialist & Head of Medical Oncology department of Tata Memorial Hospital, with Medical award.

Dr. Jaising Phadtare would be honoured with Family Welfare award and Waman Kendre with a coveted award for promotion of Marathi Theatre.

New Delhi Television (NDTV) has bagged an award for Best TV News coverage while Pradeep Chandra of Bombay Times would be conferred with Photo Journalism Awards, Jawhrani added.

Pradeep Singh, Editor of Jansatta, would be honoured with Hindi Journalism award, while Yogesh Lakhani would be felicitated with an award for Promotion of Small Scale Business.

Sahyog Foundation would confer special award of Bhapkar Guruji, teacher in rural Ahmednagar district who has done pioneering work in road construction through self efforts.

The awards shall be presented at the 11th annual function of Sahyog Foundation on May 27, 1999, at St. Andrews Auditorium in Bandra (West), 7 p.m. A cultural programme will be staged on the occasion which is co-sponsored by Powernet Technologies.

Nominations for the awards were invited through leading newspapers and the award winners were selected by Chairpersons of various committees of Sahyog Foundation including Ajit Wadekar (Sports), Asha Parekh (Women's Welfare), Dr. B. K. Goyal (Medical), Nana Chudasama (Public Service), Vishwanath Sachdev (Hindi Journalism), Sudha Chandran (Welfare of the Handicapped) and Dr. Lekha Pathak (Family Welfare).
